Sports Trading is the practice of backing and laying the outcomes of sporting events. In conventional sports gambling, the bettor only backs their opinion by placing a stake with a bookmaker for Odds that are offered at the time. Betting exchanges allow laying of bets by individuals, who can therefore assume the same role as a bookmaker to Lay Odds.
The ability to both go long (Back) and short (Lay) outcomes makes sports trading possible. Although a sports trader has the ability to trade both for and against a given outcome, they may decide to take just one position only, including a more conventional bet where they Back an outcome.
There are a number of similarities between sports and financial trading, it is possible to selectively apply some of the same principles from that sphere (although the two are not synonymous and proficiency in one does not guarantee competence in the other).
